Lamar Johnson
Assistant Principal


Lamar Johnson was born and raised in Miami, Florida and educated in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. After graduating as Valedictorian of Miami Carol City Sr. High School, he attended the University of Florida where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations with a minor in Family, Youth and Community Sciences.

Mr. Johnson was inducted into the 2008-2009 Miami Teaching Fellows Program. He started his teaching career at Poinciana Park Elementary where he helped close the achievement gap by raising his students reading skills by an average of 1.5 grade levels. During this year he was awarded the Miami Teaching Fellows 2008-2009 Effective Newcomer Award. Following that he served as a teacher and Mathematics Coach at Dr. Henry W. Mack/ West Little River K-8 Center where he quickly decided that he would pursue administration. As math coach he developed teachers, lead professional developments and served on focus groups to create ETO resources. Under his leadership Dr. Henry W. Mack’s math FCAT scores improved. In 2011, he earned his Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership from St. Thomas University.

In 2013, Mr. Johnson participated in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools iLead Assistant Principal Preparation Program. On February 14, 2013 he was promoted to Assistant Principal of Jesse J. McCrary, Jr. Elementary School. Through continual hard work as an Assistant Principal, Jesse J. McCrary, Jr. has had many academic successes including becoming a first time “B” school and removed from the Lowest 300 schools in the State of Florida list.

In 2018, Lamar was one of three Assistant Principals selected to represent Miami-Dade County Public Schools in the KIPP School Leadership Program. He currently lives in Pembroke Pines, Fl. with his loving wife and is pursuing his Educational Doctorate degree in Leadership and Management at St. Thomas University. The focus of his Dissertation is an Analysis of Teacher Perceptions of PBIS to Improve Student Behaviors in a South Florida.

Dear Lions Families,

Welcome back to school! I am humbled and honored to serve as your Assistant Principal for the 2020-2021 school year as an Assistant Principal. Building relationships with all critical stakeholders is very important to me, and I will continue to work to ensure students learn and grow every day at Frederick Douglass Elementary. Throughout the past years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and engage with parents, students, community members, and staff daily. Working with key stakeholders allows me to feel a sense of pride and motivates me to continually communicate and collaborate to meet the needs of our students.

As Assistant Principal, my mission is to focus on learning for every student, every day. As an educator and instructional leader, I believe in approaching all situations with a student-centered, team approach. Doing what is best for children is critically important, and this enables children to grow and excel in all areas.
Frederick Douglass Elementary is a school where students are supported and encouraged to grow in all areas- academically, socially, and emotionally. I am fortunate to be a part of this high-quality learning community, and I speak on behalf of the entire staff when I say we are excited to have each of you as part of our school community. It takes all of us to help every child reach his/her potential, and we look forward to sharing in your child's learning experiences.

In the future, I am looking forward to working closely with parents, community members, and staff to create an environment at Frederick Douglass Elementary that promotes the focus on learning for every student every day. I am dedicated to promoting a positive learning environment for all students and am excited to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that student learning is our main focus.
Working together we will have a wonderful year filled with learning, lifelong relationships and the joys of success and accomplishment. I look forward to meeting each of you, and to working with you and your children throughout the year.
